Mountain Stream in Summer and Autumn — History & Facts
A pair of six-panel folding screens by Suzuki Kiitsu from the 19th century, Mountain Stream in Summer and Autumn presents a stylized landscape rendered in ink and color on gold-foiled paper. The composition is divided across the two screens, with a stream flowing diagonally through a dense forest of tall trees. Seasonal changes are indicated by the presence of both autumnal leaves and summer flowers, visually linking the passage of time within a single panoramic scene. The screens are characterized by vibrant blue water, sharply contrasting with the gold background and the deep greens of the foliage.
The trunks of the trees are depicted with bold, dark lines, and the leaves are rendered in varying shades of green, while clusters of white lilies and scattered red leaves mark the seasonal transition. The gold-foiled paper creates a luminous backdrop, emphasizing the decorative quality typical of Japanese screen painting from this period. This work dates to the Edo period in the 19th century and is held in the collection of the Nezu Museum, Tokyo. Folding screens such as these were often used as interior furnishings in Japanese homes and temples, serving both practical and aesthetic functions.
Suzuki Kiitsu was a prominent painter of the Rinpa school, known for his innovative use of color and pattern, and this pair exemplifies the school’s emphasis on nature, seasonal motifs, and luxurious materials.
