Reclining Nude — History & Facts
A nude woman reclines diagonally across a richly colored red surface, her body stretching from the lower left to the upper right of the canvas. Her head rests on a white pillow, with dark hair fanned out and one arm bent behind her head, while the other arm lies along her side. The woman's face is turned toward the viewer, her features stylized with elongated lines, almond-shaped eyes, and softly parted lips.
Her skin is rendered in smooth, warm tones that contrast with the deep reds and browns of the background and bedding. The background is dominated by a dark, flat plane suggesting a wooden panel or headboard, which frames the upper part of the composition. Subtle decorative patterns swirl across the red surface beneath her, adding texture and visual interest to the setting.
Light falls evenly across her body, highlighting the gentle curves of her form and casting only the faintest shadows. The brushwork is visible in the textured treatment of the bedding and background, while the figure's contours are outlined with confident, dark lines. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figure's elongated form echoing the horizontal format of the canvas.
A signature appears in the upper right corner of the painting, inscribed in pale writing against the dark background. The lower left and lower right corners of the canvas show the white pillow and bedding peeking out beneath the figure. The background panel features rectangular outlines and subtle variations in brown, suggesting shallow relief or framing.
The red surface beneath the figure is mottled with swirling ochre and brown patterns, and the paint is applied with visible, loose brushstrokes that create a textured effect. Amedeo Modigliani created this work in 1917, during a period when he produced a celebrated series of nudes. The subject is a naked woman, a genre that Modigliani explored repeatedly in his career. The museum's record notes that this painting entered the collection through the Mr.
and Mrs. Klaus G. Perls Collection in 1997.
