Saint Sebastian — History & Facts

Saint Sebastian is an oil on canvas painting created by Bohumil Kubišta in 1912. The work presents the Christian martyr Saint Sebastian, a subject frequently depicted in Western art, rendered here in a style associated with early twentieth-century Czech modernism. The painting was completed during a period when Kubišta was actively engaging with Cubist techniques and ideas. The composition shows a stylized figure of Saint Sebastian bound to a tree, pierced by arrows.

The body and head are constructed from angular, faceted planes, with strong geometric forms dominating the figure and background. The palette is subdued, relying on earthy browns and muted greens, with the leaves above providing the only significant color contrast. The treatment of light and shadow is highly schematic, emphasizing the structural qualities of the form rather than naturalistic modeling. Painted in 1912, Saint Sebastian belongs to a period when Bohumil Kubišta was a leading figure in the Czech avant-garde, synthesizing influences from French Cubism with his own expressive approach.

It belongs to the National Gallery Prague.
