St Jerome Kneeling in Prayer — History & Facts

Rembrandt etched St Jerome no less than seven times, evidencing an enduring interest in the saint. In the predominantly Protestant 17th-century Netherlands, the choice of such a Catholic subject is quite remarkable. St Jerome, however, also served as a model to scholars and humanists.

At the least, this was in part the reason for Rembrandt’s fascination with him.
