Tabley, Cheshire, the Seat of Sir J.F. Leicester, Bart.: Calm Morning — History & Facts

A round stone tower rises near the centre of the scene, its pale walls reflected in the still water below. To the left, several boats with tall masts and ochre sails cluster together, their hulls dark against the luminous surface. Figures are visible on the decks, some standing and others seated, their forms small but distinct against the sails.

On the right, dense trees cast deep shadows over the water, their foliage rendered in broad, textured strokes that contrast with the smooth expanse of sky. Two birds skim the water’s surface in the lower left, their reflections faint in the glassy calm. The sky, painted in soft yellows and warm creams, dominates the upper half of the composition, suffusing the whole scene with a gentle, golden light.

Distant on the horizon, a pale classical building stands among trees, its shape echoed in the water below. The brushwork is delicate and controlled, especially in the rendering of the water’s mirror-like surface, which captures subtle variations in tone and the faintest ripples. The composition is carefully balanced, with the tower anchoring the centre and the boats and trees framing either side.

A small rowboat with a single figure in dark clothing is positioned in the lower center, close to the cluster of larger boats. Cattle are visible at the water’s edge in the lower right corner, their dark forms partially obscured by shadow and foliage. The far left edge of the painting is bordered by a line of low, dark trees that recede into the distance.

Soft, horizontal brushstrokes in the sky suggest thin, wispy clouds drifting across the golden light. The reflection of the tower in the water is slightly blurred, with gentle ripples distorting its base and the adjacent boats. Painted in 1809, Tabley, Cheshire, the Seat of Sir J.F. Leicester, Bart.: Calm Morning is the work of Joseph Mallord William Turner.
