The Flight into Egypt — History & Facts

This is one of Rembrandt’s earliest prints. In it, he is clearly experimenting with the technique. He etches as though he were drawing, very sketchily and with many rapid strokes.

It was not as yet a great success. Joseph and Mary are represented with their child on their way to Egypt. They were fleeing from King Herod, who considered Jesus his rival and was intent on killing him.
