Frederic Leighton

English, 1830–1896

Frederic Leighton (1830–1896) was a British painter, draughtsman, and sculptor whose works focused on historical, biblical, and classical themes in an academic style. Born in Scarborough to a wealthy family, he studied art in Europe and traveled widely throughout his life. Leighton became President of the Royal Academy in 1878 and was known for his association with the Pre-Raphaelites. He was granted a hereditary peerage that became extinct upon his death, making it the shortest-lived in history.
