James Abbott McNeill Whistler

American, 1834–1903

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) was an American artist who worked mainly in the United Kingdom, creating paintings in oil and watercolor as well as prints. He promoted "art for art's sake," avoiding sentimentality and moral themes in his work, and often titled his paintings with musical terms such as "arrangements," "harmonies," and "nocturnes" to highlight tonal relationships. Whistler signed his works with a butterfly motif, reflecting both his delicate artistic style and his combative public demeanor. His most recognized painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), is widely known as Whistler's Mother.
