Italian, 1755–1803
Luigi Mayer (1755–1803) was an Italian-German artist active in the late 18th century, known for his paintings and drawings of the Ottoman Empire. He traveled widely through the region from 1776 to 1794, producing panoramic landscapes and depictions of ancient sites across the Balkans, Greek Islands, Anatolia, and Egypt, especially ancient monuments and the Nile. Many of his works were commissioned by Sir Robert Ainslie and later became part of a collection that provided valuable insight into the Middle East of that era. His wife, Clara Barthold Mayer, assisted him and created her own paintings.
