Japanese, 1877–1945
Ohara Koson (1877–1945), born in Kanazawa, was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He played a leading role in the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements and became known for his bird-and-flower (kachō-e) prints, producing around 500 works under the names Koson, Hōson, and Shōson. Koson taught at art schools in Tokyo, collaborated with several publishers, and his prints were widely exported, especially to the United States. His works are now held in major museums worldwide, and he remained active in print design until at least 1935, passing away in Tokyo in 1945.
