Futurist Portrait — History & Facts

Painted in 1915, Futurist Portrait by Lyubov Popova is an oil on canvas work that combines elements of Cubism and Futurism, as indicated by the textual references within the composition itself. The painting was created during a period of intense experimentation in Russian avant-garde art, when Popova was actively engaging with contemporary European movements. The composition is built from angular, overlapping planes and fragmented shapes that suggest a human face and upper body, rendered in a palette of ochre, green, black, and grey, with accents of red and yellow. Letters spelling out "CUB" and "FUTURISMO" are integrated into the design, directly referencing the Cubist and Futurist movements.

The use of bold geometric forms, dynamic brushwork, and layered perspectives reflects the artist’s interest in movement and modernity, while the abstracted facial features and objects evoke both mechanical and organic qualities. Futurist Portrait was included in the 2015 exhibition "Auf der Suche nach 0,10 – Die letzte futuristische Ausstellung der Malerei" at the Fondation Beyeler. The work dates from a pivotal moment in Popova’s career, when she was synthesizing Western European avant-garde influences with the emerging Russian modernist idiom.
