Giraffe — History & Facts

A giraffe stands alone against a simplified landscape in this 1905 oil painting on oilcloth by Niko Pirosmani. The animal is depicted in full profile, occupying almost the entire vertical space of the composition. The giraffe’s body is rendered in tones of grey and black, with dark spots and a stylized, mask-like face.

The background consists of a flat, brownish ground and a sky that transitions from deep blue at the top to pale blue and white near the horizon, with no other figures or vegetation present. Giraffe belongs to a group of animal paintings created by Niko Pirosmani, a Georgian self-taught artist known for his distinctive, direct style and use of oilcloth as a support. Painted in 1905, this work reflects Pirosmani’s interest in both exotic and local animals. The simplified forms, bold outlines, and limited palette are characteristic of the artist’s approach, which has been associated with the tradition of Georgian folk painting.
