Monet's Garden at Giverny — History & Facts

A figure in a straw hat and red jacket stands on a sunlit path, surrounded by dense, blooming flowerbeds. The person faces left, with one arm extended gently toward a cluster of blossoms, suggesting a moment of quiet attention to the garden. The foreground is packed with yellow, orange, and white flowers, their rounded forms rendered in thick, dappled strokes that create a sense of lush abundance.

The path curves from the lower center to the left, its pale, sandy surface contrasting with the saturated greens and blues of the surrounding foliage. Behind the figure, the garden rises in a mass of greenery, punctuated by splashes of red, yellow, and blue, giving the impression of a wild, overflowing border. Sunlight falls unevenly across the scene, catching the tops of the flowers and the figure's hat, while the background remains in deeper shade.

The paint is applied in short, broken dabs and swirling motions, especially in the leaves and blossoms, building a vibrant surface texture. In the lower right, the artist's signature appears in red, integrated into the foliage. No other figures are visible in the garden, and the scene is dominated by dense vegetation with no open sky present.

The upper left and right corners are filled with deep green foliage, blending into the background with blue and yellow highlights. The lower left edge of the painting features clusters of orange and yellow flowers, some with visible green stems and leaves rendered in loose, quick strokes. In the lower right, upright wooden stakes or stems are visible among the flowers, painted with vertical brown lines.

The light falls most strongly on the path and the front of the figure’s white skirt, leaving the background flowers in cooler, shadowed tones. Blue pigment is used throughout the foliage and shadows, especially in the lower right and left corners, creating a cool contrast to the warm flowers. The paint is layered thickly in some areas, with visible brush marks and impasto creating a tactile, textured surface, especially in the flowerbeds. Monet's Garden at Giverny is created by Claude Monet in 1895.

The painting is also listed in the holdings of Kunsthaus Zürich under inventory BU 0072.
