Pd Corsets — History & Facts
No one who walked the boulevards of fin-de-siècle Brussels could escape the bold, alluring posters of Henri Privat-Livemont, whose work helped define the visual language of the Art Nouveau movement. Among his most recognizable images is Pd Corsets, a commercial poster that once adorned city walls in the 1890s, advertising a fashionable corset brand to the modern woman. The poster’s striking blend of elegance and sensuality was so effective that it became a touchstone for both advertising and the era’s shifting ideas of femininity.
Today, collectors and scholars still debate the exact date and circumstances of its creation, as no definitive commission record has surfaced. The scene Privat-Livemont chose is both direct and theatrical: a young woman, poised and self-assured, stands in profile as she fastens her corset. Her flowing hair and the sinuous lines of her dress echo the organic curves that define Art Nouveau. The background, often rendered in delicate pastels or golds, frames her figure with stylized flowers and arabesques, suggesting both luxury and nature.
The corset itself is not merely a garment but a symbol—of fashion, of changing social roles, and of the tension between freedom and constraint. Unlike Alphonse Mucha’s more allegorical women, Privat-Livemont’s subject is grounded, her gaze meeting the viewer’s with a sense of modern confidence. As with many posters of the period, Pd Corsets was intended to be ephemeral, pasted on walls and soon replaced, which makes surviving examples rare and highly prized. The work’s authorship is undisputed, and its style—marked by flowing lines and lush ornament—places it firmly within Privat-Livemont’s most productive years, when he was at the forefront of Belgian Art Nouveau.
Today, original prints of Pd Corsets are sought after by collectors and are occasionally exhibited in museums with strong holdings of decorative arts, such as the Musée d’Ixelles in Brussels. The poster stands as both a commercial artifact and a work of art, capturing the spirit of its age and the hand of one of its most distinctive artists.
