Petworth, Sussex, the Seat of the Earl of Egremont: Dewy Morning — History & Facts

A warm, golden haze fills the sky above a broad, reflective lake, casting a soft glow over the landscape and water. On the left, a gentle slope rises from the water’s edge, dotted with dense clumps of trees whose dark forms contrast with the luminous sky. Near the center foreground, a cluster of bushes emerges from the water, sheltering two small figures in a boat, one seated and the other standing, both absorbed in their activity.

To the right, two sailing boats rest on the still lake, their tall masts and dark hulls mirrored in the water, with several figures visible on board and another standing in a rowboat nearby. A pair of white birds and a darker waterfowl glide on the surface in the lower left, their forms small but distinct against the shimmering reflections. In the distance, the pale façade of a large house stretches across the horizon, its regular windows and central spire standing out against the glowing sky.

The brushwork is delicate and fluid, with soft transitions between tones and a subtle play of light across the canvas, especially in the sky and water. The composition balances the weight of the boats and figures on the right with the wooded slope and bridge on the left, leading the gaze toward the stately house beyond. In the lower right corner, the reflection of the two sailing boats is softly blurred, merging with the pale tones of the water.

Along the far left edge, a brick bridge with multiple arches extends into the misty lake, partially obscured by shadow. The upper left corner is densely packed with rounded treetops, their dark masses contrasting against the lighter sky. A gentle patch of sunlight falls on the grassy slope just above the bridge, creating a subtle highlight amid the muted greens and browns.

The sky is streaked with thin, horizontal brushstrokes of orange and cream, giving a textured effect to the early morning light. Fine, almost sketch-like lines define the rigging on the boats, standing out crisply against the glowing sky behind them.
