The Nieuwe Kerk and the Town Hall on the Dam in Amsterdam — History & Facts
This painting was made as the pendant to The Sint- Antoniuswaag in Amsterdam. In both, Ouwater plays with contrasts of light and shade in a similar fashion. The cloudy skies set the tone.
The imposing town hall in the foreground is in shadow, while the Nieuwe Kerk somewhat further back is bathed in sunlight.
