A single, commanding image splits the world in two: on one side, furrowed fields stretch beneath the blade of a spade; on the other, the prow of a ship cuts through blue waves. Use Spades Not Ships by Abram Games draws the viewer in with its bold symmetry, the two halves fusing seamlessly into an emblem of urgent choice. The spade’s wooden handle rises like a mast, yet the message is unmistakable—dig, do not sail; cultivate, do not import.

The palette is clear and direct, with earthy browns and sea blues divided by a sharp vertical, while the text, integrated into the forms themselves, issues its rallying cry in block capitals: “USE SPADES NOT SHIPS. GROW YOUR OWN FOOD AND SUPPLY YOUR OWN COOKHOUSE.” This poster belongs unmistakably to the world of wartime Britain, when every resource was precious and every hand was called to service. Between 1939 and 1945, such images were commissioned to galvanize civilians and soldiers alike, urging self-sufficiency and the conservation of shipping for the war effort.

The poster’s clarity and wit are characteristic of Abram Games, whose work for the British government helped define the visual language of the era. Today, this piece survives in the collections of the Imperial War Museums, a reminder of the power of design to shape not just opinion, but action. Look again at the meeting point of spade and ship—here, necessity becomes invention, and the choice between land and sea is rendered as stark as the times themselves.
