Andries van Eertvelt was a Dutch painter known for his maritime scenes and still lifes. He is recognized as one of the early proponents of the genre of marine painting in the Netherlands during the 17th century. Van Eertvelt was born in 1590 in Antwerp, which was then part of the Spanish Netherlands. He later moved to the Dutch Republic, where he became a prominent figure in the art community of Rotterdam. He is believed to have trained under the influence of the Flemish school, although specific details about his artistic education remain unclear. His career flourished in the 1620s and 1630s, during which he produced numerous works that depicted ships and coastal landscapes, often characterized by dramatic lighting and meticulous detail. Major works include 'The Battle of the Scheldt' and various depictions of naval engagements.
