Gerard van Honthorst (1592–1656) was a Dutch Golden Age painter recognized for his scenes illuminated by artificial light, earning him the Italian nickname Gherardo delle Notti. After training in Utrecht, he traveled to Rome, where he adopted a style influenced by Caravaggio and painted for patrons such as Vincenzo Giustiniani and Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Returning to the Netherlands in 1620, he became a prominent portraitist and held leadership in the Utrecht Guild of St. Luke. He worked for royal patrons including Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia and Charles I of England, producing portraits and allegorical works before continuing his career in Utrecht.
