Russian, 1876–1942
Ivan Bilibin (1876–1942) was a Russian illustrator and stage designer celebrated for his richly decorative illustrations of Russian folk and fairy tales. Drawing on medieval Russian art, folk embroidery and the Japanese woodblock print, he framed vivid scenes — the Firebird, Vasilisa the Beautiful, Baba Yaga, the Tale of Tsar Saltan — within intricate ornamental borders. A member of the Mir Iskusstva ("World of Art") movement, his bold outlines and jewel-like colour made him one of the defining visual voices of the Russian fairy tale.
