Russian-German, 1860–1938
Marianne von Werefkin was a Russian-German painter and a key figure in the expressionist movement. Born on September 10, 1860, in Tula, Russia, she later moved to Germany, where she became an influential artist. Von Werefkin studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and was associated with the Munich Secession, which sought to break away from traditional artistic conventions. She was known for her vibrant colors and emotional intensity, often exploring themes of spirituality and the human condition. Her significant works include 'The Self-Portrait with a Red Scarf' and 'The Woman with the Black Scarf.' In 1910, she co-founded the 'Der Blaue Reiter' group with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, which played a crucial role in the development of modern art. Von Werefkin's contributions to expressionism and her role as a female artist in a male-dominated field have made her an important figure in art history.
