Dutch, 1623–1664
Working in Amsterdam, Reinier Nooms (c. 1623–1664), also called Zeeman, created highly detailed paintings and etchings of ships and foreign ports, drawing on his earlier experience as a sailor. This Dutch artist depicted naval battles from the Anglo-Dutch Wars and traveled to Paris, Venice, and North Africa. His precise etchings, published in the 1650s, influenced many artists and were later admired by Charles Meryon. Nooms’s works are held in collections such as the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the Netherlands Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.
