A Group of Dancers — History & Facts
Four dancers in pale tutus cluster together at the right side of the canvas, their bodies angled toward each other in a close, informal group. One dancer bends forward, her hands clasped in front of her knees, while another leans in to whisper or adjust something near her companion’s head. The figures are painted with loose, visible brushstrokes, their limbs and faces softly blurred, giving a sense of fleeting movement and the haze of stage light.
The dancers’ white costumes catch the cool green and blue tones of the floor and background, with touches of warm orange and brown suggesting the wooden panels and reflected light of a rehearsal room. In the left background, a large mirror reflects a ghostly, indistinct figure and a patch of bright light, adding depth and a sense of space behind the dancers. The composition is asymmetrical, with most of the action pressed to the right, while the left side is dominated by the open floor and the blurred reflection.
Degas uses sketchy, almost unfinished lines to outline the dancers’ arms and tutus, allowing the greenish ground to show through and blend with the figures. The faces of the dancers are only partially defined, their features merging with the shadows and the soft, powdery texture of the paint. A signature in red appears at the lower left corner, standing out against the muted tones of the floor.
The overall effect is one of intimacy and immediacy, as if the viewer has stumbled upon a private moment between performers just before or after a rehearsal. A Group of Dancers was created by Edgar Degas in 1890.
