Atalanta and Meleager Hunting the Calydonian Boar — History & Facts
A dense forest fills most of the canvas, its foliage rendered in deep greens and browns, with shafts of golden light filtering through the trees from the left. Near the lower center, two figures stand out against the darkness: a woman in a vivid red garment and a man beside her, both engaged in the hunt. The boar’s bristling fur and powerful form dominate the foreground, its head thrown back and mouth open, emphasizing the drama of the moment.
To the left, a horse and rider emerge from the shadows, the horse’s head lowered and legs bent as if in motion, adding a sense of urgency and movement to the scene. The forest itself is painted with energetic, swirling brushstrokes, especially in the foliage, which creates a sense of depth and atmosphere, while the ground is textured with earthy tones and dappled light. Small details, such as the scattered leaves, broken branches, and the subtle glint of metal on weapons, reward close inspection and contribute to the vivid realism of the scene.
The composition leads the viewer’s gaze from the dramatic foreground action into the shadowy, mysterious depths of the woods, where the forms of trees and undergrowth dissolve into darkness. The title, Atalanta and Meleager Hunting the Calydonian Boar, identifies the mythological subject and the central figures, both of whom are named in the sources. Peter Paul Rubens creates this work between 1635 and 1640, as established by the dating in the museum and collection records. The painting belongs to the genres of landscape and mythological painting, combining a dramatic narrative with a richly imagined natural setting.
The Netherlands Institute for Art History provides a digital record for this work under ID 10120, supporting its attribution to Rubens and its subject matter.
