Autumn Effect at Argenteuil — History & Facts

Golden autumn trees line the left bank of a wide river, their foliage rendered in dabs of ochre, orange, and green that dissolve into one another. On the right, a single tall tree stands apart, its slender form and feathery leaves painted with vertical strokes that echo its reflection in the water below. The river stretches into the distance, occupying the center of the scene, its surface broken by shimmering reflections of the sky and trees, painted in loose, horizontal touches of blue, white, and pale yellow.

Above, the sky is filled with scattered, fluffy clouds, their shapes picked out in light strokes of white and pink against a pale blue background. Sunlight filters through the scene, bathing the foliage and water in a gentle glow, while the brushwork remains visible throughout, giving the surface a lively, textured quality. The far left edge of the painting is densely packed with overlapping foliage, creating a thick border of color.

In the lower left corner, the water is tinged with pink and lavender reflections from the trees above. The rightmost edge of the riverbank is covered by a mass of green and yellow brushwork, blending into the water. The horizon line is slightly blurred, merging the distant buildings and sky with atmospheric softness.

Pale blue and white dabs in the upper right corner suggest the brightest area of sky. The lower right corner includes a patch of dark blue-green water, contrasting with lighter tones nearby. Short, broken lines in the water near the bottom edge mimic the vertical forms of the trees above.
