Behangsel met het huwelijk van Mirtillo en Amaryllis DM 017 1238.1c Dordrechts Museum — History & Facts
A swirl of figures gathers before a grand temple, their gestures and glances leading us through a moment of ceremony and anticipation. The scene is alive with movement: at the heart, a kneeling woman crowned with flowers faces a man in a red cloak, while attendants and onlookers cluster around, each caught in their own drama. The marble statue presiding over the temple hints at divine witness, while the smoke rising from the altar to the left signals ritual—perhaps a marriage or sacred union.
In the foreground, goats and sheep graze, their calm a counterpoint to the human energy, grounding the pageantry in the rhythms of pastoral life. The palette is gentle, all soft greens and creams, with the rich red of the temple columns drawing the eye to the center, where the story unfolds. Painted in 1742 by Aert Schouman, this work belongs to a world where such grand decorative scenes—wall hangings, or behangsels—were commissioned to transform interiors into landscapes of myth and allegory. The eighteenth century saw a flourishing of these painted wall panels in the Netherlands, often designed to evoke Arcadian harmony or classical virtue for the homes of the prosperous.
Little is recorded about this specific panel, now in the collection of the Dordrechts Museum, but its scale and ambition speak to the era’s taste for theatrical storytelling and learned references. As you look again, notice how the architecture and animals frame the human action, inviting you to imagine the room this painting once adorned, and the conversations it might have sparked.
