Cat fight — History & Facts
Two cats arch their backs and bristle at each other on top of a brick wall, against a pale, cloudy sky. Francisco de Goya designed the long, narrow picture in 1786 as a tapestry cartoon to hang above a door, part of his Four Seasons series (1786–1787) for a room in the royal palace of El Pardo. When the cartoon reached the Prado in 1870, it was dismissed as lacking artistic interest and attributed to no one. It lay rolled up in the museum's storerooms for more than a century, until the scholar Mercedes Águeda recovered it in 1984 and argued that it was by Goya.
Its authorship is still debated. It is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
