Queen of Spain Maria Louisa, née Bourbon-Parma — History & Facts
A woman stands in three-quarter view, her body turned slightly to the left while her gaze meets the viewer directly. Her face is framed by voluminous brown curls, and her expression is reserved, with a faint, enigmatic smile. She wears a grand hat adorned with white and yellow feathers, blue ribbon, and lace, which towers above her head and casts a subtle shadow onto her forehead.
Her gown is richly ornamented, shimmering with silver, gold, and blue patterns, and trimmed with sheer white lace at the neckline and sleeves. Her right hand rests lightly on a surface covered with a pale, patterned cloth, beside which a crown sits on a red cushion, signifying her royal rank. In her left hand, she holds a closed fan, its delicate ribs just visible against the folds of her skirt.
Light falls from the left, illuminating her face, hands, and the sparkling surface of her dress, while shadows deepen the folds of the drapery and the recesses of her hat. The paint is applied with smooth, controlled brushwork, especially in the rendering of the fabrics and jewels, while the feathers and lace are suggested with lighter, more fluid strokes. The composition centers her upright figure, with the crown and drapery balancing the scene and reinforcing her regal presence.
A green drapery forms the backdrop, its folds sweeping diagonally across the upper left and right corners of the painting. The lower left corner shows the edge of a red cloth beneath the pale patterned surface, adding a contrasting warm tone to the composition. The crown is detailed with gold and red accents, and several pearls are visible along its rim.
The background darkens significantly behind her head and hat, creating a strong contrast that emphasizes the contours of her silhouette. Blue floral motifs are scattered across the fabric of her dress, their shapes echoed in the blue ribbon and decorations on her hat. The paint handling in the background is looser and more blended, while the lines defining the edges of her sleeves and bodice are crisp and precise. Francisco de Goya painted this portrait in 1790, depicting Maria Luisa of Parma, Queen of Spain.
