Countryside landscape with trees — History & Facts
A winding path of earth and grass leads into the foreground, bordered by dense undergrowth and wild shrubs. To the right, a cluster of tall trees with slender, pale trunks rises, their branches spreading upward and outward, their foliage rendered in deep browns and muted greens. On the left, a darker mass of trees and bushes forms a shadowy barrier, their leaves merging into a single, textured silhouette against the sky.
The sky dominates the upper half of the composition, filled with soft, swirling clouds painted in cool greys and warm creams, lending a sense of movement and changing weather. The brushwork is loose and varied, with dappled strokes in the foliage and more blended, atmospheric handling in the sky and distant landscape. The composition is balanced by the vertical thrust of the trees on the right and the horizontal sweep of the hill and sky, guiding the gaze from foreground to distance.
Small details, such as the delicate twigs and the subtle variations in the grass, reveal close observation of nature. The lower left corner contains a patch of tangled, lighter green vegetation with small, pointed leaves. The upper right edge of the painting is filled with a dense canopy of branches and leaves, painted with quick, broken strokes.
In the far background, the hill slopes gently upward, covered in a muted wash of brown and green that blurs into the sky. Fine, dark lines define the slender trunks and branches, especially on the right, where the paint has been applied in thin, linear marks to suggest bark and twigs. Claude Monet created Countryside landscape with trees in 1882.
