Diana on the stag hunt — History & Facts
A stag bursts forward at the left, its body twisting as it leaps away from a pack of hounds and hunters. Two large dogs snap at the stag’s legs and flank, their bodies stretched in mid-pursuit, while another hound lunges from below, mouth open and teeth bared. Behind the animals, a group of figures surges to the right, each captured in dynamic motion, arms raised and muscles taut as they drive the hunt onward.
The landscape stretches into the distance, opening onto rolling hills and a broad sky streaked with clouds, while the foreground is dense with grasses and foliage. The composition is tightly packed, with figures and animals overlapping in a swirling mass that drives the action from left to right across the canvas. The brushwork appears vigorous and fluid, especially in the rendering of muscles, fur, and drapery, lending a sense of immediacy and movement to the scene.
Subtle tonal contrasts model the bodies, while the background recedes softly, setting the drama of the hunt against a tranquil landscape. In the lower right corner, a dog’s head is turned sharply upward, its mouth open and ears flattened. The background at the far left shows a calm river bordered by trees and distant hills under the cloudy sky.
The edges of the painting are filled with wild grasses and leafy plants, especially prominent in the lower left foreground. Light catches on the raised spear tips and muscular shoulders, casting deep shadows beneath the figures and animals. The painting belongs to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
