Jeanne Hébuterne (au foulard) — History & Facts
A woman with elongated features sits in a wooden chair, her body turned slightly to the right while her head tilts gently to the left. Dark brown hair falls in soft waves to her shoulders, framing her face and accentuating the graceful curve of her neck. She wears a deep blue dress with short sleeves, its simplicity offset by a vivid red scarf knotted at the center of her chest and draped over her shoulders.
The scarf’s edges reveal hints of purple and blue, echoing the palette of her dress and adding depth to the composition. Her left arm rests along the arm of the chair, while her right hand lies gently in her lap, fingers elegantly elongated and softly modeled. Behind her, the background is divided into two contrasting planes: a broad expanse of warm, reddish-orange on the right and a cooler, pale green section on the left, suggesting the corner of a room.
The light is diffuse, casting no strong shadows, and the surface of the painting shows smooth, visible brushstrokes, especially in the background and flesh tones. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figure’s tilted head and arms creating a subtle rhythm of curves and diagonals across the canvas. The artist’s signature appears in the upper right corner, written in dark paint against the reddish background. Amedeo Modigliani painted this portrait in 1919, as stated in the catalogue.
The work was included in the Sotheby’s, London sale held from 21 to 24 June 2016, listed as lot 12.
