Nymphéas — History & Facts
A cluster of water lilies floats serenely across a pond, their rounded green leaves scattered over a surface of shimmering blue. Two white blossoms rise above the pads, one near the lower left and another closer to the center, each with petals delicately tinged with yellow at the core. The lily pads vary in size and orientation, some overlapping, others isolated, their edges softly defined with hints of pink and violet that catch the light.
The water itself is painted in broad, fluid strokes of blue, with subtle transitions between lighter and deeper tones, suggesting gentle movement and reflections. Dabs of color—rose, lavender, and pale green—appear on the surfaces of the pads, giving them a sense of depth and a fleeting, atmospheric quality. The composition is horizontal and open, with the lilies and pads arranged in a loose arc that leads the gaze across the pond without a strict focal point.
The brushwork is loose and visible, with soft, blended edges and areas where the paint seems almost feathered, especially in the transition between water and leaf. Near the bottom right, the artist’s signature appears in red, a small but distinct mark against the cool tones of the water. The upper right corner features a pale, almost translucent patch of water where the blue pigment is thinned and softly blended into the surrounding hues.
Along the lower edge, the water is rendered with more visible brushstrokes, creating a sense of texture and movement beneath the lilies. A faint, irregular line of yellow-green outlines parts of several lily pads, distinguishing their contours from the water. Near the bottom left, a single lily pad is partially cropped by the edge of the canvas, its colors merging into the water with loose, swirling strokes. No background or horizon interrupts the scene; the entire surface is devoted to the pond and its floating plants, immersing the viewer in a close-up view of nature.
Nymphéas is created by Claude Monet, as stated in the title and artist line.
