Portrait of Arkhip Kuindzhi — History & Facts
Portrait of Arkhip Kuindzhi was painted by Ivan Kramskoi in 1872 using oil on canvas. The work measures 36.2 by 29 cm and is held in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (inventory 668). The subject is the artist Arkhip Kuindzhi, a contemporary of Kramskoi, depicted during a period when both were active in the Russian realist movement. The portrait presents a close-up, bust-length view of Kuindzhi, who is shown with a full beard and thick, tousled hair.
His gaze is directed downward and to the left, and his expression is contemplative. The background is a muted, textured brown, which sets off the sitter’s face and dark clothing. The brushwork is loose and painterly, especially in the hair and clothing, while the face is rendered with greater detail and subtle gradations of light and shadow. This painting belongs to a period when Kramskoi was known for his psychological portraits of fellow artists and intellectuals.
The Tretyakov Gallery acquired the work, where it remains in the permanent collection. The portrait is recognized as a significant document of the Russian artistic milieu of the 1870s, capturing the likeness of a major landscape painter by one of the leading portraitists of the era.
