Portrait of Yuri Samarin — History & Facts
Portrait of Yuri Samarin is an oil painting completed by Ivan Kramskoi in 1878. The work depicts Yuri Fyodorovich Samarin (1819–1876), a Russian writer and philosopher, and was created two years after Samarin’s death. Measuring 89.2 by 70.8 cm, the portrait is executed on canvas and is held in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery, where it is registered under inventory number 672. The composition presents Samarin seated in a three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background.
He wears a black suit with a white shirt and a visible watch chain, and his hands are calmly folded in his lap. The artist has rendered the sitter’s features with careful attention to detail, particularly in the texture of the beard and the lifelike modeling of the hands and face. The subdued palette and controlled lighting emphasize the sitter’s contemplative expression and the solidity of his presence. The painting belongs to a period in Ivan Kramskoi’s career when he was recognized for his psychologically insightful portraits of Russian intellectuals and public figures.
The work was completed posthumously, reflecting the continued cultural significance of Samarin in late nineteenth-century Russia. Since its creation, the portrait has been part of the Tretyakov Gallery’s collection, where it is preserved as an example of Russian realist portraiture of the era.
