Rocks at Belle-Île, Port-Domois — History & Facts
Jagged cliffs jut into the sea from the right side of the composition, their dark, craggy forms occupying the foreground and middle ground. The rocks are painted in deep purples, blues, and browns, with thick, textured brushstrokes that suggest their rough surfaces. Light from the setting or rising sun glows across the water, casting shimmering reflections in pale yellows, pinks, and silvery blues.
The upper half of the painting is filled with a luminous sky, where soft pink clouds drift across a warm gradient from orange to pale blue. Out at sea, several rocky islets appear, their forms softened by atmospheric perspective and the hazy light near the horizon. The water swirls around the rocks in the foreground, rendered with energetic, broken strokes of blue, turquoise, and white.
No human figures or boats are present; the scene is entirely devoted to the wild, elemental meeting of land, sea, and sky. The lower left corner is dominated by dark, shadowy water, where deep blues and purples are layered with swift, short brushstrokes. At the top edge, the sky is punctuated by small, scattered pink clouds, each outlined with touches of orange and lavender.
The farthest rocky islet in the background is rendered in soft, blurred contours, creating a sense of distance and mist. Light falls most strongly on the water near the horizon, where the surface glimmers with streaks of pale yellow and peach, contrasting with the darker tones below. The lower right corner of the painting contains the artist's signature in yellow, standing out against the dark rocks.
The edges of the cliffs are sharply outlined with deep blue and violet, emphasizing their rugged contours. In the far distance, faint blue lines suggest the meeting of sea and sky along the horizon. The water near the bottom edge is layered with short, choppy strokes of indigo and navy, giving a sense of movement.
Light catches the upper edges of the rocks, creating subtle highlights in lavender and peach.
