The Bridge at Bougival — History & Facts
A broad bridge stretches across the Seine, its pale surface dappled with the long shadows of trees that line the walkway to the left. On the near side, a woman in a white bonnet stands with a child, their figures turned toward the riverbank below. The river runs parallel to the bridge, its water broken into rippling patches of white and green, and a small boat floats near the far bank.
Beyond the bridge, houses with red and blue roofs cluster at the foot of a wooded hillside, their shapes softened by loose, quick brushstrokes. Several figures cross the bridge, some walking alone and others in pairs, their forms rendered with minimal detail, suggesting movement and distance. The sky is filled with shifting clouds, painted in broad, textured strokes of white, blue, and grey, giving a sense of changing weather and atmosphere.
The composition leads the viewer’s gaze along the diagonal of the bridge, from the figures in the foreground to the distant hillside and sky. The palette is dominated by earthy greens, browns, and ochres, contrasted with the cool blues and greys of the sky and water. Brushwork is visible throughout, with short, broken touches in the foliage and water, and smoother, broader strokes for the sky and road. The Bridge at Bougival is painted by Claude Monet in 1869.
The scene depicts Bougival, a town on the Seine, with its bridge, a woman and child, and the river itself. The genre is landscape painting, capturing a specific place and moment in Bougival.
