The Married Couple Abraham Casteleyn and Margarieta van Bancken — History & Facts
The married couple Margarieta van Bancken and Abraham Casteleyn, founder of the Haerlemse Courant (Haarlem Newspaper), operated In de Blije Druck, the city’s printing shop. The books, atlas, and globe refer to their profession and knowledge. After Abraham’s death, Margarieta continued the printing house, taking on the administrative and financial responsibilities.
The bust in the background represents the Haarlem townsman L.J. Coster, long credited with having invented book printing.
