Wheatstacks, Snow Effect, Morning (Meules, Effet de Neige, Le Matin) — History & Facts
Two large wheatstacks dominate a snowy field, one rising at the right edge and the other set further back toward the left, both capped with a thin layer of snow that glistens in the pale morning light. The snow-covered ground stretches across the foreground, its surface broken by short, textured brushstrokes in blue, lavender, and touches of ochre, suggesting the unevenness of the frozen earth and the play of light on ice. Behind the wheatstacks, faint outlines of low buildings and trees emerge through a veil of mist, their forms softened by the cool haze that fills the middle distance.
The sky glows with a gentle gradation from warm peach and pale yellow at the horizon to a cooler, almost silvery blue higher up, enveloping the scene in a tranquil, early morning atmosphere. Light falls from the left, casting blue shadows across the snow and accentuating the rounded forms of the stacks, while the right side of each stack is touched by a subtle warmth, hinting at the sun’s first rays. The brushwork is loose and visible throughout, with thick, broken dabs of paint layering color upon color, especially in the depiction of snow and straw, creating a lively surface texture.
Small flecks of pink and violet appear in the snow and shadowed areas, enriching the color harmony and suggesting reflected light from the sky and surrounding landscape. The composition is carefully balanced, with the larger wheatstack anchoring the right side and the smaller stack and distant buildings leading the gaze deeper into the frosty expanse. At the lower left, the artist’s signature and the date '91 are inscribed in reddish-brown paint, standing out against the pale snow. Claude Monet painted Wheatstacks, Snow Effect, Morning (Meules, Effet de Neige, Le Matin) in 1891.
