Anton Romako

Austrian, 1832–1889

Anton Romako (1832–1889) was an Austrian painter born in Atzgersdorf, Vienna, to Josef Lepper and Elisabeth Maria Anna Romako. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, then in Munich, Venice, Rome, and London, and later worked as a portrait, genre, and landscape painter in Rome. After returning to Vienna in 1876, he struggled to regain his reputation and relied on wealthy patrons. Romako died in poverty near Vienna, and his work was later promoted posthumously, with several paintings confirmed or suspected to have been stolen from Jewish owners during the Nazi era.
