Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) was an English author, illustrator and natural scientist, best loved for her enchanting children's tales such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Her tender watercolours of waistcoated rabbits, hedgehogs and mice have delighted generations of readers. A keen naturalist, she also produced accomplished scientific studies of fungi and plants. With the fortune from her books she became a devoted Lake District farmer and conservationist, ultimately bequeathing thousands of acres to Britain's National Trust.
