Frédéric Bazille

French, 1841–1870

Frédéric Bazille was a French painter associated with the Impressionist movement. He is known for his contributions to the development of modern painting and for his innovative approach to color and light. Bazille was born on December 6, 1841, in Montpellier, France, into a wealthy family. He began studying painting in Paris in 1862, where he trained under the academic painter Gustave Courbet. Bazille became friends with several key figures of Impressionism, including Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His career was tragically cut short when he died in battle during the Franco-Prussian War on November 28, 1870, at the age of 29. Bazille's notable works include 'The Family Reunion' and 'Summer Scene,' which showcase his ability to capture the effects of light and atmosphere. Although his life was brief, his work had a lasting impact on the Impressionist movement and influenced future generations of artists.
