A Maid with a Child in a Pantry — History & Facts

A maidservant shows a little boy the contents of her jug. At that time, all children wore dresses with walking reins to hold onto them while they learned to walk. De Hooch was renowned for his views through one space to another.

He depicted two here: one to the cellar and another to the front room, where he painted the daylight streaming in pure white.
