A satyr holding a basket of grapes and quinces with a nymph — History & Facts
A satyr with curling horns and a crown of vine leaves stands at the center, his muscular torso bare and his face turned toward the viewer in a sly, almost mischievous grin. He holds a large wicker basket brimming with fruit, the grapes and quinces rendered with a striking illusion of weight and ripeness, their surfaces catching the light in translucent blues, greens, and deep purples. The satyr’s right arm supports the basket from below, his hand emerging from a dark, fur-like pelt that wraps around his body.
Beside him, a nymph in a red garment leans in, her face softly illuminated and her expression gentle as she delicately touches a vine curling from the basket. Her hair is gathered back, and the warm tones of her skin and robe contrast with the cool, shadowed background. The fruit dominates the lower half of the composition, with clusters of pale green and dark purple grapes spilling over the edge of the basket, their leaves twisting outward in lively arcs.
Among the grapes, several quinces nestle, their yellow skins dappled with light and shadow, adding to the sense of abundance. The background is a deep, atmospheric darkness, broken only by a soft cloud in the upper left, which sets off the figures and fruit in sharp relief. The brushwork is smooth and controlled, especially in the modeling of flesh and the glossy surfaces of the grapes, while the leaves and fur show more textured, lively strokes.
The figures are closely grouped, their gestures and glances drawing attention to the overflowing basket and the playful interaction between them. The composition is tightly framed, with the satyr and nymph filling most of the space and the fruit basket projecting forward, almost into the viewer’s realm. Every detail, from the satyr’s wiry beard to the veins on the grape leaves, is rendered with attentive realism, heightening the sense of immediacy. The scene belongs to the tradition of mythological painting, bringing together legendary beings and the bounty of nature in a moment of shared delight.
A satyr holding a basket of grapes and quinces with a nymph was created by Peter Paul Rubens between 1592 and 1640.
