A Thames Backwater with Windsor Castle in the Distance — History & Facts

A broad sweep of pale sky stretches over a tranquil riverside scene, its soft tones dominating the upper half of the composition. Low on the horizon, the distinctive silhouette of Windsor Castle appears in the distance, its forms rendered in muted blue-grey against the lighter sky. In the foreground, cattle stand at the water’s edge, some drinking, their reflections shimmering in the still surface of the backwater.

A sandy bank curves gently from the left towards the centre, guiding the gaze past the animals and into the middle ground, where clumps of trees rise in loose, feathery brushstrokes. To the right, a cluster of trees is painted with rapid, almost transparent touches, their trunks and foliage catching the light and casting faint shadows on the ground and water below. Small figures are visible near the water’s edge and among the trees, their forms sketchy and indistinct, suggesting quiet activity along the bank.

Hints of a building or structure appear at the far right, its walls and windows barely defined, blending into the surrounding vegetation. The palette is dominated by gentle ochres, greens, and blues, with subtle transitions between land, water, and sky, creating an atmosphere of calm and early morning light. Brushwork varies from broad, smooth sweeps in the sky to more textured, broken strokes in the foliage and reflections, giving the scene a sense of immediacy and freshness.

Paint is applied thinly in many areas, allowing the weave of the canvas to show through and lending a luminous quality to the lighter passages. The composition is balanced horizontally, with the castle anchoring the distant centre and the cattle and trees providing points of interest across the foreground and right side. A Thames Backwater with Windsor Castle in the Distance was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1805.
