Atalanta and Meleager in Pursuit of the Calydon Boar — History & Facts
A wild boar charges at a group of hunters, its tusks bared and mouth open in a snarl, as spears and arrows converge from all sides. At the left, a woman in a pink and gold tunic, her blonde hair tied back, lunges forward with a bow at her side, her arm outstretched toward the beast; this is Atalanta, named in the title. Beside her, several men crowd in, their faces tense and focused, one gripping a spear with both hands as he aims for the boar’s head.
A muscular figure in a red cloak, identified by the title as Meleager, stands at the center, his body twisted in action as he thrusts his spear into the animal. Behind Meleager, an older man with a grey beard leans forward, his gaze fixed on the struggle, while another hunter kneels at the front, clutching a black hound. To the right, two horsemen in flowing garments rear up, their spears raised high; the horses’ manes and the hunters’ hair are caught in a rush of movement.
In the foreground, several hounds leap and snarl at the boar, their bodies twisting and overlapping in the melee, while one lies wounded beneath the animal’s hooves. The entire group is framed by dense trees and foliage, with a glimpse of blue sky and soft clouds opening up in the background, lending depth to the scene. Sunlight pours in from the left, illuminating the flesh tones, pinks, and golds of the figures’ skin and clothing, while casting dramatic shadows across the ground and tree trunks.
The composition is tightly packed, with bodies overlapping and diagonals formed by spears, limbs, and fallen branches, creating a sense of urgency and chaos. Rubens uses broad, energetic brushstrokes for the foliage and sky, while the figures are rendered with smooth, meticulous modeling and glistening highlights on skin and fabric. Small details abound, such as the quiver of arrows at Atalanta’s hip, the glint of metal on the hunters’ weapons, and the foaming mouths of the hounds. The title, Atalanta and Meleager in Pursuit of the Calydon Boar, identifies the mythological subject and the principal figures at the center of the hunt.
Peter Paul Rubens is named as the creator of this work.
