Bouquet de roses — History & Facts
A vase of roses, painted with swift, almost impatient strokes, commands attention not through grandeur but through intimacy. The blooms, in various stages of opening and fading, seem to lean toward the viewer, their petals rendered in thick, creamy impasto that catches the light. The palette is restrained—cool greens and pinks against a pale, neutral ground—yet the brushwork is lively, giving the flowers a sense of movement and fleeting presence.
The casual tilt of the stems and the uneven spread of blooms suggest a moment just after arrangement, when nature’s disorder reasserts itself. The light falls from the left, animating the petals and casting gentle shadows that anchor the vase to its surface. Works like this, painted in oil on canvas and signed by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen at lower right, belong to a tradition of still life that flourished in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century France. Such paintings were often made for private enjoyment, tokens of domestic beauty in an age of rapid urban change.
Steinlen, better known for his illustrations and scenes of Parisian life, here turns his eye to the quiet poetry of everyday objects. The painting, measuring 33 by 41 centimeters, is now documented in the collection of kollerauktionen.ch, with a date before 1923. History has kept few traces of this particular bouquet’s journey, but its freshness invites the viewer to linger, tracing each petal as if it might wilt at any moment.
