Christmas Eve — History & Facts

A festive domestic interior is depicted in Christmas Eve by Carl Larsson, painted in watercolour between 1904 and 1905. The composition centers on a long, elaborately set dining table laden with food and drink, surrounded by family members of various ages. At the left, a young woman in a checked dress and white apron stands holding a decorated tankard, while children and adults gather near the table and fireplace.

The background features a large hearth with a roaring fire, candelabra, and shelves filled with books and household items. The colours are warm and earthy, with detailed patterns in the textiles and ceramics, and the scene is rendered with precise, delicate brushwork characteristic of Larsson’s style. This work belongs to the tradition of Swedish domestic genre painting in the early twentieth century, reflecting the artist’s interest in family life and holiday customs. Carl Larsson was known for his watercolours of home interiors and family scenes, often set in his own house in Sundborn.

Christmas Eve was reproduced in Ett hem åt solsidan, published in Stockholm by Bonniers in 1955, page 52. The painting dates from between 1904 and 1905, during a period when Larsson was producing many works celebrating Swedish cultural traditions.
