Dance in the Country — History & Facts
A couple dances closely beneath the broad leaves of a tree, their forms filling nearly the entire height of the canvas. The man, dressed in a dark blue suit and black shoes, turns his head toward his partner, his left arm encircling her waist. The woman, wearing a white dress patterned with pink flowers and a vivid red hat, faces outward with a gentle smile and meets the viewer’s gaze.
Her right hand, gloved in yellow, holds a decorated fan aloft behind the man’s head, while her left hand rests on his shoulder. Light falls across the couple, illuminating the woman’s face and dress, and casting soft shadows that model the folds of her skirt and the man’s jacket. At the lower right, a straw hat lies on the ground, its round shape echoing the swirl of the woman’s skirt as she moves.
Behind the dancers, a table covered with a white cloth holds a glass and utensils, suggesting the setting of an outdoor gathering or ball. Two faces appear in the background at the left edge, partly obscured by the railing and the figures in the foreground, hinting at other guests or onlookers. The background is filled with loosely painted green foliage, rendered in soft, blended brushstrokes that create a sense of depth and a lively, sunlit atmosphere.
Touches of yellow and blue in the ground and shadows add warmth and vibrancy to the scene. The composition is vertical and tightly framed, focusing attention on the intimate exchange between the dancers while including small details that evoke the festive setting. The paint surface shows visible, energetic brushwork, especially in the foliage and fabric, giving the image a sense of movement and immediacy. Dance in the Country was painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1883.
The same source states that both figures are painted life-size, and the scene is set under a chestnut tree. Dance in the Country was created alongside two companion works, Dance in the City and Dance at Bougival, which also depict couples dancing.
