Dance at Bougival — History & Facts

A couple waltzes in the foreground of an open-air café garden. The woman, in a pale pink dress with a ruffled hem and a red bonnet trimmed with purple fruit, tilts her head and looks down with a slight smile; the man, in a dark blue jacket and a yellow straw hat, holds her hand high and bends his bearded face toward hers. Behind them other guests sit at a small table under dappled green foliage, and a bunch of violets lies on the ground at the bottom. The cafés of Bougival, on the Seine outside Paris, were popular recreation spots for city dwellers.

Who posed is not settled: the Museum of Fine Arts' senior curator Ronni Baer has suggested the woman may be a blend of Suzanne Valadon and Aline Charigot, the women linked to the two companion dances now in the Musée d'Orsay. The man is not securely identified. Pierre-Auguste Renoir signed and dated it 'Renoir. 83.' and made Dance in the City and Dance in the Country the same year; the three were shown together in Boston in 2012.

The museum acquired this one in 1937. It is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
