Drunken Silenus supported by Satyrs — History & Facts

A robust, bearded figure with flushed cheeks and a crown of vine leaves slumps at the center, his heavy body supported by several attendants. The central figure’s eyes are half-closed and his mouth slightly open, suggesting the effects of drink. To the left, a muscular satyr with goat legs braces Silenus under the arm, his face tense with the effort of holding him up.

A woman in a red and white garment reaches above Silenus’s head, plucking a cluster of grapes from the overhanging branches, her blond hair catching the light. The background is filled with dense, leafy branches heavy with fruit, while a patch of blue sky appears at the far left, suggesting an outdoor setting. Light falls strongly from the left, illuminating the pink and gold flesh of the figures and creating deep shadows that model their forms.

The paint is handled with energetic, visible brushstrokes, especially in the rendering of hair, fur, and foliage, giving the scene a sense of movement and vitality. Rich reds, blues, and greens dominate the palette, with highlights of white and gold lending brilliance to the composition. The figures are tightly packed, their limbs and gestures interlocking to form a dynamic, swirling arrangement that fills the canvas from edge to edge.

Small details, such as the veins in Silenus’s arm, the glistening grapes, and the satyrs’ pointed ears, reward close inspection. At the lower right corner, two small children with curly blond hair gaze upward while holding large bunches of grapes and fruit. A figure at the far left edge, dressed in blue, plays a pair of wooden pipes, his cheeks puffed out as he blows.

Behind the central group, a torch held aloft casts a warm glow on the faces of two figures partially obscured in shadow. The upper right corner is densely packed with dark foliage and clusters of grapes, deepening the contrast with the illuminated skin tones. The landscape in the lower left background reveals a glimpse of distant green fields beneath a pale sky.

Loose, expressive brushwork is visible in the rendering of the satyrs’ fur and the leaves, with energetic lines defining the contours of limbs and faces.
